The Avalon Theatre will screen the film Victim (Obět´) by Slovak director Michal Blaško on March 13, 2024, at 8 pm, as part of the continuing Lions of Czech Film Series, bringing top Czech films to the Washington, DC community. The suspenseful drama centers on a woman seeking justice, torn between family and the search for truth. The film is in Czech and Ukrainian with English subtitles.
ABOUT THE FILM
When the son of Ukrainian immigrant Irina is attacked, the whole city stands up in solidarity with her family and condemns their Roma neighbors who allegedly committed the crime. As time passes, Irina begins to spot inconsistencies in her son’s story. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for four prestigious Czech Lions in 2023, including best director, film, actress, and screenplay. It also won the 2023 Czech Film Critics’ Award for Newcomer of the Year – Michal Blaško (director). In 2022, the film was the Slovak entry for the Oscars.
