About the Slovak American Society of Washington, D.C.
The Slovak American Society of Washington, D.C. (SASW) is a tax-exempt, independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1988 by residents of the Washington, D.C., area. The Society’s membership lives primarily in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Membership is open to Americans with ancestral roots in what is today Slovakia, more recent émigrés to the U.S., and others who have an interest in Slovakia, its culture, and its people. The SASW functions primarily as a social, cultural, and educational organization, but also supports efforts to extend freedom, democracy, and prosperity to Slovakia. In pursuing these goals, the SASW sponsors or supports lectures, cultural events, exhibitions, Slovak language classes, and social activities, such as an annual picnic, a Sv. Mikulas (St. Nicholas) party in December, scholarships for students in Slovakia, and other related activities.
